Addiction Recovery: the first four points

June 16th, 2011

Fight against drugs, like any addiction, be it caffeine, smoking or drinking, or even chocolate indulgence is not easy to stop. But along the way that I dealt with my addiction all its own and decided to share my experiences with others hoping to learn from my mistakes. Here are my first four steps in fighting an addiction.

1) Make the decision:

You and only you can decide when something is good or bad for you. Others tend to try to pressure us to do something, whether good or bad, but it is not that your decision must be taken. To overcome addiction, you have to decide which is sufficient for you, not others. One great thing about our country and our life is the freedom of choice. You have the right to choose to leave the control of drug addiction, or who control it. Why wait? Making this decision now! Life is too short and too precious not to be happy. Decide and commit itself now that you are strong and able to overcome everything!

2) Be brave and learn to say no;

Much easier said than done, but as I learned to make decisions that I say, make a decision, or is it a yes or a no hell, hell! If something deep in your gut tells you not to do it, do not! Simple as that. Yes, you will face ridicule, so your friends will try to pressure you. No, not a bed of roses, but you know what … So what? Who cares? You will be much longer term. We are not born with drug addiction and yet we are born happy. Do not be afraid to try new places to go, new friends, new hobby. What I personally find that works best for me is to write a goal that is dear to my heart, something I want, so I always carry with me and when I feel weak, I go out and look. This gives me the strength to continue.

3) Communicate:

Two heads are better than one. The dependence is not something to confront alone, realizing that now! You will need a support group, if a friend, family member, a professional counselor, find someone you can trust and ask for help. Do not do it alone. We all need help from time to time, so we have friends and family. Also learn to listen, open your ears and listen to what others are trying to tell you, those who sincerely care. Writing is another powerful technique that can be expressed without having a conversation with one another. Maybe start a newspaper, who knows, one day you may be able to use it to help others!

4) Forgive:

“To forgive is to free a prisoner, and discovering that the prisoner was you.” Lewis B. Smedes

Do not be a victim. Those who have injured or those who have done wrong, forgive them. This is just one more element that keeps you, feelings of guilt and emotion. Stop dwelling on the past and look to the future. And ‘much brighter and more beautiful than you can imagine. Take your sunglasses!
